The Parish Church of St. Peter & St. Paul, St. Osyth, Essex

We have many social and charity fund raising events during the year. One of the main events is the annual Festival held over the August Bank Holiday weekend, (See below for 2009 details), which attracts a large number of visitors who always seem to enjoy the event as well as the refreshments provided.

The ‘Festival’ includes an open-air service (weather permitting) celebrating with ‘Songs of Praise’ and held jointly with St Osyth Methodist Church.

Our Festivals always have a theme. In 2006 a “Festival of the Countryside”, in 2007 a Festival of Flowers and Fashion, in 2008 a Flower Festival celebrating 900 years of the Church and the Priory in 2009 it was 'Anniversaries & Celebrations'. Other events include an annual Christmas Fayre and a special “All Hallows” evening for children in October.

Below are details and photos from our most recents events. You can see more photographs in our Gallery by clicking where prompted.

ANNUAL FLOWER FESTIVAL

28th-30th August 2010

Organised by the 'Friends' of the church, this year's Flower Festival was another wonderful occasion. Through the talent of the arrangers and displayers the theme this year was 'Your Favourite Book' . With so many possibilities for books, many well known authors were passed by. No Shakespeare or Jane Austen surprisingly, but the talented arrangers chose to illustrate a very varied range from history to cooking, thrillers to romance, classics to children's, and of course the Bible as you might well expect.

The weekend started with the ever popular Preview Night when over 100 people enjoyed entertainment and sang songs relating to books. Solos were performed by GregPotter, Barbara Francis and Tina Edwards. Hilary Worn and her troop played and sang a Portuguese traditional song. Poems were read by Pamela Garrod and Mark Roberts. The audience joined in some rousing songs led by soloists and Mark and Rosemary Roberts.

Our annual Songs of Praise service was held inside the church this year as unfortunately although the weather was bright, the wind was too cool. The service was led by Revd. Tony Pugsley and the congregation chose many of their favourite hymns. This was a challenge for our professional organist, Anthony Bailey, playing in his first Songs of Praise, but he rose to it magnificently, well supported by the Choir. .

OPEN GARDENS WEEKEND

13th & 14th June 2010

............

Organised by the 'Friends' of the church, gardens large and small were again opened to the public right across the parish this year on a glorious weekend. There were new gardens as well as old favourites and this year the new allotments invited visitors for the first time. Entry to each of the the gardens was by purchasing a brochure - cost £3.00 - which gave a brief description of each garden plus details of it's location. The proceeds from this event will be used by the Friends for the maintenance of the church building and its furnishings. Refreshments and plants for sale were available at many of the gardens, with the proceeds from these going to different charities. To learn more about the 'Friends' click on the button at the top of this page.

Christmas 2009

The photograph above was taken the week before Christmas when the village had significant snowfall which settled and lasted for several days. To see more photos of the inside of the church over Christmas click on the photograph.

Christmas Party

During the Interregnum, because everyone in our church family has been working very hard to support our church in all sorts of ways, our churchwarden, Sonia Grantham, suggested that we give ourselves a deserved treat and a bit of a pat on the back and have a Christmas Party, especially as we were not able to have our usual Harvest Festival Lunch in the autumn.

So a party was arranged for Saturday December 5th and about 100 adults and children had a great time of fellowship, playing games, eating a wonderful spread. The afternoon was rounded off with superb entertainment from Essex based magician and 'International Children's Entertainer of the year' 2009....
